Did you know all children from 6 months to 18 years old should get a flu shot, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations? If you answered yes, you're in the minority. Only 19 percent of mothers surveyed by Families Fighting Flu got that answer correct.
Another misconception was held by the 47% of moms who said hand washing is the best way to combat influenza. In fact, the flu vaccination is best, according to CDC.
The poll of moms with children under 8 in child care found that 63% were concerned about their child catching the flu in a child care setting and 57% had taken at least one child to get a flu vaccination in the past two years. Reading through the heart-wrenching stories of children lost to the flu opened my eyes to the real dangers posed by this illness.
My little daughters' daycare center offered on-site flu shots this week, for $20 each. I would've loved the convenience a couple weeks earlier -- we all already had our vaccinations at the pediatrician's office.
Readers, have you been vaccinated? What about your children?
