Working-class moms typically face the toughest work-life balance issues. When you're called in for mandatory overtime and you don't have child care, what do you do? Many parents lose their jobs over just that kind of situation.

That's why the Labor Project for Working Families, the About Working Moms Site of the Week, aims to put issues of work-life balance on the bargaining table and before policy makers.

Formed in 1992, the project advocates for paid sick days, child care funding and paid family leave. The site keeps readers abreast of the latest work-life news, produces fact sheets for use in negotiations and collects key facts about child care, family leave, elder care and other family-oriented topics.

I'll be interested to hear your feedback on the site!

(1) Paid Family Leave Collaborative :

“The Labor Project for Working Families is also a founding member of the Paid Family Leave Collaborative. The LPWF plays a critical part in furthering the Paid Family Leave Collaborative’s mission by training union stewards on Paid Family Leave and other family leave rights. California’s Paid Family Leave Law, the nation’s first, entitles eligible workers to up to 55% of their usual pay while they take up to 6 weeks off work to provide care for a family member with a serious health condition or to bond with a new child. Paid Family Leave is employee-funded and administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD). You can contact the EDD’s Paid Family Leave at 877-BE-THERE or http://www.edd.ca.gov/Disability/Paid_Family_Leave.htm

You may also contact the Work and Family Hotline for more information or free assistance with family leave issues: 800-880-8047 or http://www.paidfamilyleave.org.
