Thrifty Thursday: Buy in Bulk

By , About.com GuideSeptember 3, 2009

Follow me on:

While back to school shopping this year, I was stunned by the variety of convenience packs of snacks aimed at children's lunch boxes: multi-packs of single-serving pretzels, applesauce, yogurt and even mini water bottles. But when you check the prices and amount of food, you realize you're paying double or even triple the price for the convenience of slipping a package into the school lunch box.

Instead, do what I did: buy in bulk. You can save so much money by purchasing a family-sized bag of pretzels and doling out servings into Ziploc bags either before hand or while you're packing the kids' lunches. Not to mention that it's better for the environment! I also use this strategy with:

  • Big cans of mandarin oranges and peaches, which I divide into small Tupperware.
  • Yogurt; I portion out servings from the 32 oz tub, which fortunately comes in flavors now.
  • Water or juice; buy a reusable bottle from safe plastics and refill it over and over again!
  • Presents for kids' birthday parties: when I find a good gift on sale, I'll buy several and keep them handy for the next party.

True, it does take extra time, but only a few minutes -- and I spend that time feeling good about all the money and packaging I am saving. Now, please share your favorite strategies for thrifty living!

    Katherine,
You impress me. I’m the working mom who takes the pre-packaged “easy” route! Although, as my kids start school tomorrow they will arrive wearing the same back packs as the year prior. I skipped the whole new back pack thing this year and even did without the new school clothing shop. They are good to go for a bit… no reason to shell out the extra cash when it’s unnecessary.
