Looking back at the five resolutions I made last year, I'm pleasantly surprised that I managed to keep two New Year's resolutions faithfully -- to have regular one-on-one time with each child and my husband. And even though I strayed from the resolutions I made about exercise and diet, I kept them at least two-thirds of the time.
Regular readers of this blog know that I sometimes struggle with being a good wife and mother amid the daily pressures of work, household management and my own type-A tendencies. This past year was particularly stressful because my work life changed dramatically -- with positive results, but change is still difficult. It's nice to see that perhaps I'm not as bad as I thought I was.
But clearly, I need to focus on taking care of myself in 2010. So I'm resolved to finally get a physical examination after six years of letting my obstetrician do my annual blood work. I'll return to the daily exercise goal I set at this time last year. And no more indulgent lunches or food after 7 p.m. at night!
What are your resolutions for 2010? Does the end of the decade have any special significance for you? For more resolutions related to parenting and family, check out our New Year's resolutions blog carnival!

Well, I have 2 so far. Run 1,000 miles over the course of this year (a friend of mine set a similar goal of 1,400 miles for 2009 – and she made it!). The second goal is to stop complaining (okay, significantly reduce).
I want to lose 10 pounds and get to the gym more often–I dropped to once a week during the holidays. One goal I’d like to see everyone adopt is simply to do the right thing. The Rotary Club’s Four-Way Test is a good guide: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build good will and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
No more indulgent lunches or food after 7 p.m.? Yikes, there’s no way I could ever make that resolution since I’ve been known to eat half a pint of ice cream at 11 p.m. But I totally agree with you–we moms often forget to take care of ourselves as we juggle work and family. You’ve inspired me to think about ways I can improve my health too!
I think every parent would do well to take better care of themselves. And children benefit when they see their parents healthy and happy. Thanks for the nudge!
