When I first started working, I dated a man who never used a single day of vacation. He carried over all 15 of his annual leave days from year to year until they eventually expired. Hmmm. There's a reason I ended up marrying someone else.
Me, I like my vacation time. This summer I have two full weeks off and two long weekends planned. Granted, I sometimes end up working on professional projects at the beach, but at least that's my choice -- dictated by my own insane work ethic and the fact that I'd rather write than read a trashy novel by the seaside.
Once I had kids, I quickly reached my annual leave allotment with sick days and time off for school events. That's about when I negotiated reduced hours with my boss, come to think of it. I can't imagine being a working parent and not using every single hour of allowed vacation.
What about you? Do you use your vacation time each year? How much are you allowed -- and what would you pay for a few days' extra?
