Today is a banner day in the world of work-life balance, with the announcement of the Sloan Award winners for excellence in workplace flexibility and the first full day of a conference on work-life in 2012 and beyond, in Washington D.C. I'll be at the conference today and tomorrow, learning about the best employer practices and what truly works in implementing flexible work.
The centerpiece of the event, for me, is a report on the Sloan Award winners published by conference sponsors the Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management, which I wrote about for Fortune. The stories from the trenches -- whether WellStar Health System letting employees schedule themselves or Ryan LLP and MeetingMatrix International granting unlimited paid time off -- really bring to life the challenges and triumphs of the day-to-day struggle that is work-life balance in our always-on world.
Do you work at one of the companies among the 262 Sloan winners? Please share your story of real life at that employer. Is your company as good as the numbers make it seem? What are the persistent challenges to your work-life balance?
