If you're a working mom in an industry where there have been a myriad of cutbacks and layoffs, you may want to think about training for a recession proof job. These positions, often integral to society, have more job stability and have been shown to best weather bad economic times.

Recession proof jobs are often those that will always be in demand - many of which are in the education and medical fields - and rarely see layoffs whether due to downsizing or budget cuts. Even when you may lose your job, it's easier to find a new position due to the need for these positions.

These recession proof jobs have topped the country's various lists of jobs that are most stable during economic downturns.

Registered nurse: With a nationwide shortage for over a decade, these vital medical professionals are always needed around the clock to work in various patient care settings, from hospital emergency rooms to in-patient clinics. In addition, nursing often offers a flexible work schedule, such as 12 hour shifts, and part-time work options.

Computer systems analyst: If you have a knack for computers, think about pursuing a career as a computer analyst. Computers are interwoven into every field and sector of the economy. This is a job that will morph with technology.

Teacher: While it can be hard to obtain a job in the perfect school in your state, there is always a need for teachers, particularly in inner-city schools. The hours and summers off make this a very appealing career choice for working mothers.

Physical therapist: With more insurance company providers making provisions for physical therapy, this is an in-demand field to help everyone from children with disabilities to the geriatric population suffering from osteoarthritis.

Mental health counselor: With more people opening up to the benefits of counseling, social workers and psychologists are in-demand professionals who can help adults and children get through tough times or simply make sense out of life.

Doctor: Whether it's a general practitioner or oncologist, there will always be a need for good physicians and surgeons. These great jobs for moms can be demanding for working mothers, but it's also very rewarding when you're in the business of saving people's lives or improving their quality of life.

Computer technician: There is always a need for people to fix computers. With so many businesses being computerized, and so many homes including at least one computer, there will always be a need for tech support to get rid of the bugs that make a computer go on the fritz.

X-ray technician or radiologist: With more routine screening being done for diseases, such as breast cancer, there is a need for X-ray technicians to perform these important tests and radiologists to read them for physicians.

Police officer: Who says women can't fight crime? There are many women entering the police force around the country today. This is also a job that offers mothers flexible work schedules, such as evening or weekend shifts, when a spouse can care for the kids.

Court reporter: With more cases flooding the courtrooms across America, there will always be a need for court reporters who have the important job of recording everything said during trials, depositions and other court matters. This is a job that also offers part-time or per diem work.

Special education professional: From special education teachers to paraprofessionals assigned to help developmentally disabled students, there is a great need for professionals trained in this area to help children.

Optometrist: Everyone, whether they wear glasses or not, should have yearly eye checkups, and optometrists are professionals who are rarely laid off. This field also allows for flexible schedules for working moms who need a work-life balance.

Emergency medical technician or paramedic: These life-saving professionals are always needed to respond to 911 calls. There are jobs around the country for these very important first-line responders.

Veterinarian: Just like people, pets get sick, and veterinarians are important doctors to keep some of our most beloved family members well year-round.

Dental hygienist: With the rise in gum disease, people are realizing the importance of having their teeth cleaned by trained professionals. There are great opportunities for working moms to work for dentists and periodontists across the country.
