Wish I Could Be a Stay at Home Mom

Share Your Story: Back to Work Journey

From Rachel

The reason I went back to work was ...

I have a stable, good-paying job with benefits. My husband's job has no benefits and no security.

For me, the transition back to work was ...

Very difficult and seems to only be getting worse. I hope to be able to stay at home for a few years in the near future. Even though the babies (twins) seem happy at daycare, I miss them very much and know this will be a short period of time. That said, I also know that when they are school-age, I will only want to work part-time to be with them and support them. What a crazy emotional trip. I really envy people who make the transition to working better than me. I feel anxious the whole time I am at work and cry a lot after I drop off or pick up the babies (I have twins).

Lessons Learned

  • Be grateful. I have an amazing husband, amazing babies that almost never cry, and a good work environment (including the chance to work part-time/telecummute). Although I find this very painful, I know I am a very lucky person overall.

When I went back to work, my oldest child was age ...

My twins were three months old.

The hardest thing about going back to work was ...

Being away from the babies. I would love to be a SAHM. If my husband gets a more stable job, I am going to quit. I really really hate being away.

The most rewarding thing about going back was ...

Knowing how lucky I am to have a good stable job with benefits in this economy.

If I could go back and do one thing differently ...

I'm not sure. I feel like we are doing the best we can given our circumstances.
